Just because your kids grow up doesn’t mean you can’t have fun with them on Halloween. After they get beyond the early adult stage and into their twenties, they enjoy spending time with you again. I had tickets for the Sacramento Rivertrain Ghosts and Ghouls Beer and Wine Bash for Friday night and invited my son to join me. There were young and older adults attending. Most in costumes for the Halloween theme. Who doesn’t like tasting beer and wine? We took a Lyft to and from so that we could indulge safely.
When we arrived, there was an envelope on our table with a welcome letter and our drink tickets. We didn’t sit down though; we strolled through the narrow hallways to the open air cars where the band was playing and got our fill from the three tasting stations. My son liked the beer while I stuck with the wines.
The 2.5-hour trip began as we rolled away from the station at sunset to the golden hues of pinks and oranges mixed with thick lines of dark and light blues. So beautiful but almost impossible to capture as a photo. It was a moment to be present. Watching the landscape moving past us in the open air was dreamy. Beautiful to see the trees lit up with the lights on the train and the moon shining through the clouds. I leaned on the rail, feeling the breeze and my palm extended open almost but never touching the leaves on the thinnest branches reaching toward us. The train travels at about 10 to 15 miles per hour.
Halfway through the trip, we stopped at a park along the river where we de-boarded and had the costume contest. It was a fantastic time. We had fun, and it was a good mother and son bonding experience. It’s so important to have that quality time together with your adult kids. Life goes by faster than you think. Make good memories.

The Sacramento RiverTrain rail line spans 14 miles from West Sacramento to Woodland, through open farmland, over the Fremont Bridge, and through the Yolo County Wildlife Refuge. At a leisurely 10 to 15 miles per hour, the round trip can take as long as three hours, which gives us plenty of time for a cozy dinner, social wine or beer tasting event, or even an entertaining show. We hope you’ll find something new to try in an unexpected place.
The Sacramento RiverTrain is a family-owned and operated business that is not affiliated with the California State Railroad Museum.
