Your Next Chapter Starts Here—Even If You’re Not Ready

A soulful guide to letting go—and saying yes to what’s next.

This season of life hits different.

Whether your youngest just walked across the graduation stage or your oldest is packing up their childhood room to move out, you might be staring at your home thinking…

“Now what?”

This isn’t just about cleaning out closets or maybe listing your house. It’s about letting go of the place where so much life happened—and figuring out what life looks like now.

And trust me, I get it.

My Story: From Tucking Him In to Letting Him Go

When my son was in high school, I already knew the shift was coming. I’d walk by his bedroom at night, knowing he was tucked in and safe, and just soak in that comforting feeling—because I could feel time slipping.

And then one day, it was time to let go.

Whether they move out to a college dorm, a shared apartment, or they stay home a little longer, we’re raising them to not need us anymore. And that’s beautiful and heartbreaking all at once.

I remember the transition from tucking him in every night to hearing him yell, “Mom! Come tuck me in!” as a fifth or sixth grader. And then suddenly… nothing. No more tuck-ins. Just closed doors and growing independence.

That’s when I realized that this isn’t just a shift for them. It’s a shift for us.

I Chose to Grow Too

When the house got quieter, I started asking myself: What now?

  • I went back to school.
  • I studied graphic design, photography, marketing.
  • I built a business.
  • I said yes to things I didn’t get to explore when I was younger.
  • I grew—not just as a mom, but as a woman.

This empty nest chapter isn’t about loss. It’s about space. And freedom. And choosing what’s next with intention.

Step One: Feel All the Feelings

Grief. Relief. Guilt. Hope.

Walk through your home and let yourself remember. Honor it. Cry if you need to. These walls held your memories. You don’t need to rush this.

Step Two: Rediscover You

This isn’t the end—it’s the beginning of a new version of you.

Start asking:

  • What have I always wanted to do but put off?
  • What brings me joy now?
  • Who am I without the constant buzz of family life?

Journal Prompt:
What did I love doing before life got so full? What would I love to try now?

Step Three: Ditch the Stuff, Keep the Memories

Every drawer, every closet—it’s full of stories. But not all those stories need to come with you.

Keep what brings joy. Take pictures of the rest. Letting go isn’t erasing the past—it’s honoring it while making space for what’s next.

Step Four: Imagine a Life That Fits You Now

What do you need in a home?

Less maintenance? More light? Closer to the grandkids? A space that truly fits your lifestyle?

Quick checklist:

  • Smaller square footage
  • Lower maintenance
  • A fresh start in a new location
  • More time and energy for travel, hobbies, you

Final Thought: You’re Not Losing a Home. You’re Gaining a Future.

It’s okay to be scared. It’s okay to feel sad. But don’t let those feelings stop you from stepping into your next beautiful season.

If the house doesn’t fit your life anymore, that’s not failure—it’s evolution. And if you’re ready to talk options, I’m here.

The Best Part? We Both Grew—And Now We Work Together

And here’s the funny thing, they say: “They always come back.” Well, mine did—just in a different, amazing way. My son is now grown, and he works with me on I Love Fair Oaks. He’s a skilled and talented real estate photographer and videographer, doing real estate media for many local agents—and yes, for me too.

It’s fun. It’s meaningful. And honestly? It’s such a gift.

What’s wild is that when I went back to school and started chasing my creative passions—graphic design, photography, marketing—I didn’t realize it would ripple out and change his life too. I joke with him sometimes: “Aren’t you glad I followed my dream? Because look where it led you!”

The truth is, what we do as parents matters. Our kids are watching us—even when we think they aren’t. And while they don’t have to follow in our footsteps, when we grow, they often grow with us.

I thank God, and every good thing that I listened to that voice in my heart and pursued what I loved. Because now? I get to live my dream and share it with my son.

And I’m telling you—I’m having the time of my life.
